This session will be an opportunity to hear about the research we have conducted into AI and its ability to translate various forms of communications.

Are You Reaching Everyone? AI, Translation & Inclusion

Date: Tuesday, July 7th 2026

Time: 10:30am to 12pm

ONLINE SESSION

According to the 2021 Census, there are over 4 million people across England and Wales whose first language is not English or Welsh. Some live in your community – are you reaching them?  Making multilanguage translation can be costly, is AI ready to help?

This was the question that inspired the research into AI-powered translation tools. Conducted with support from Cardiff University, we tested how AI tools can be used for translation for accessible and inclusive communication.

Using 8 languages identified as being important to the sector, the research explored translation through different communication methods:

  • Document translation using different digital tools
  • Audio dubbing translation
  • AI avatar generation from a script
  • Testing videos of ‘report a repair’ and whether the AI can understand on behalf of a contact centre operator

Note:  Also included English Welsh testing to support the new requirements on bilingual services within housing

This session will be an opportunity to hear all about what was discovered, ask questions, and learn best practice when it comes to AI and translation. We will cover:

  • Research Background and Context

  • User Experience – hear insights about using each digital tool and AI platform

  • Cultural considerations of voice dubbed video

  • Results & Feedback – find out what native speakers thought of the translation & communications methods used

  • Key takeaways – what can we learn from the research and how does this inform the future of tenant communications

Who should attend?

Anyone! We believe that the value of the research extends beyond the housing sector and encourage anyone with an interest to join. Inclusive communication benefits everyone.
