Preparing for Plug-In Solar: A Staff Discussion for Social Housing

Understanding upcoming regulation, opportunities, and sector considerations

Thursday 11th June: 1.30pm - 2.30pm

The UK Government has announced plans to make “plug-in solar” systems available within months as part of its wider clean power mission.

These low-cost solar systems, already widely used across parts of Europe, are designed to plug directly into household sockets and could become increasingly attractive as energy costs continue to rise.

Whilst the technology may create opportunities for households to reduce energy bills, it also raises important questions for social housing landlords around permissions, electrical & fire safety, and installation standards.

This free staff discussion offers a space for housing staff to come together, share perspectives, discuss early thoughts, and better understand the upcoming changes and what they may mean for the sector.

This is not a technical training session, but rather a collaborative discussion to explore:
  • What “plug-in solar” systems are and why they are gaining attention
  • The UK Government’s proposed direction and upcoming regulation
  • Potential opportunities and concerns for social landlords
  • Questions around tenant permissions, safety, compliance
  • What organisations are already thinking about or preparing for risks, and unknowns?
  •  Why landlords working with tenants need to develop a policy on this.

[Note: TPAS Cymru will be doing a training session for tenants and front-line staff once deregulation dates are confirmed]

Who should attend?
  • Housing staff
  • Asset management teams
  • Sustainability and decarbonisation lead
  • Compliance and maintenance teams
  • Tenant engagement staff
  • Anyone interested in understanding the potential impact of plug-in solar within social housing

Why are we talking about this?
The UK Government recently announced plans to make low-cost “plug-in” solar panels available within months as part of its wider clean energy strategy. These systems are already widely used across Europe and could become increasingly common in homes, balconies, and outdoor spaces across the UK.
