Who Benefits from Solar Export? Three SEG Models in Practice

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) has become an increasingly important issue for social landlords and tenants across Wales.

With more homes benefiting from solar panels, a key question has emerged: who should receive the income generated when surplus electricity is exported back to the grid?

Recent media coverage has also brought greater attention to the issue, with tenants questioning whether potential income from their homes is being lost. At the same time, many landlords are actively developing or reviewing their own SEG policies.

This practical webinar will showcase three different approaches currently being explored or used in Wales:

• Landlord-led SEG: the landlord claims the SEG income and reinvests it into homes, services or wider decarbonisation activity.
• Tenant-led SEG: tenants are supported to register and receive SEG payments directly.
• Partnership models: landlords work with third-party organisations, such as Good Energy, to manage export arrangements and explore alternative ways of sharing the benefits.

Rather than suggesting there is one “right” model, this session will give attendees the opportunity to hear how different approaches work in practice, understand the considerations behind them, and explore what might work for their own organisation and tenants.

There will also be time for questions and discussion with speakers and other attendees.
